A holographic projection of the late jazz innovator John Coltrane plays a role in a key scene from Cameron Crowe's "Vanilla Sky," starring Tom Cruise and Penélope Cruz. The film was just released on DVD. Crowe and Paramount Pictures turned to Reelin' In The Years Productions for pristine footage of the tenor sax giant blowing "My Favorite Things," gleaned from a rare 1965 European television appearance. Coltrane died two years later.
In Crowe's film, Tom Cruise's character hosts a party where guests are captivated by a life-size three-dimensional projection of Trane performing, seemingly in the middle of the room. There, Cruise's character David Aames meets the woman who will become his obsession.
RITY President David Peck was honored to have been asked to provide the performance from Reelin's archives. "It's very cool to see John Coltrane come to life on film," reports Peck. "They used the clip in a very effective, imaginative way."
Reelin' In The Years Productions exclusively represents the Coltrane performance as well as over 15,000 others, making RITY one of the world's largest archives of musical footage.
